What are QSLM Approved Fasteners?

Aerospace Manufacturing is proud to manufacture QSLM approved fasteners that are trusted by some of the largest aerospace/defense agencies and organizations in the world, including Bombardier, DLA, Sikorsky, and Lockheed Martin.

What are QSLM approved fasteners?

QSLM approved fasteners are fasteners manufactured by an organization on the Defense Logistics Agency’s Qualified Suppliers List for Manufacturers (QSLM).

The U.S. military uses some of the most technologically advanced, expensive, and important machines known to man, and many of these are aircraft. To ensure that the millions of parts used in these aircraft are of the utmost quality and are manufactured consistently, manufacturers must be pre-qualified by the Defense Logistics Agency Qualified Suppliers List for Manufacturers (QSLM).

To be on the Qualified Suppliers List for Manufacturers, applicants must meet certain conditions and comply with all established QSL criteria. The requirements vary depending on the commodity being manufactured. As a manufacturer of high strength, close tolerance aerospace fasteners, AMI must work in accord with both QSL criteria and all applicable Fastener Quality Act regulations.

For more information, check out the DLA’s Qualified Suppliers List for Manufacturers.

Man builds his own Boeing 777 twin-engine jet — from paper

When you think of a paper airplane, you probably think of the most common design: an 8 1/2 by 11-inch piece of paper divided seven times. Maybe you even made them when you were a kid.

Luca Iaconi-Stewart isn’t doing that.

He’s building an almost exact replica of a Boeing 777, the long range 300ER model, at 1/60th the normal size. Everything from the reverse thrusters for the engines to the inboard and outboard slat systems on the wings were created from ordinary manila folders and glue. Even the cabin doors slide open and closed like a real Boeing 777.

Amazing Aerospace Bolts & Screws Made of Alloy Steel

Alloy steel is a high strength carbon steel that has been alloyed with other elements in order to improve its mechanical properties. Many aerospace bolts & screws are made of alloy steel.

Alloy steel aerospace bolts & screws are generally cadmium plated because they are not naturally resistant to corrosion. Alloy steel fasteners can also be heat treated up to 300 ksi to improve their mechanical properties. One alloy steel that we use frequently is Alloy Steel 8740.

Understanding Alloy Steel Aerospace Bolts & Screws

Alloy steel 8740 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel that is far more responsive to mechanical and heat treatments than carbon steel. Aerospace Manufacturing creates numerous aerospace bolts & screws of 8740 alloy steel, including:

Fighter Jets are Getting Laser Weapons by 2021

It will be just like Star Wars!

…maybe.

The United States Air Force (USAF) recently awarded Lockheed Martin $26.3 million “for the design, development, and production of a high power fiber laser” and have the goal of putting that laser on a fighter jet by 2021. Whether they will be able to accomplish this gargantuan task is another matter.

Laser Weapons have been in development for years

Formally called “directed energy weapons” in military parlance, lasers have actually been in development for the past twenty years. The lasers have become smaller and more stable, and their power has grown from dozens of watts to dozens of kilowatts.

The problem is that the enormous weight required to generate destructive energy makes these devices very difficult to implement on anything except extremely heavy vehicles. Lockheed recently unveiled a powerful 60 kilowatt-class laser that can fit on a truck. It can burn through a tank and knock a mortar out of the sky, but it can only fit on the largest truck in the U.S. Army.

Fitting a powerful laser on a nimble fighter jet remains temporarily out of reach. But it’s nearly guaranteed that it will be accomplished in the future, and that’s because the demand for it is so great.

Military strategists envision that one day they will also be able to accomplish such tasks as destroying incoming ballistic missiles, knocking down enemy communication networks, and shutting down enemy vehicles.

Stay tuned!

Titanium Metric Fasteners: When and Why They are Used

Aerospace Manufacturing is a trusted manufacturer and supplier of titanium metric fasteners that are essential for the domestic and international aerospace and aeronautical industries.

Titanium metric fasteners are essential in both aviation and aerospace. Although steel (carbon, alloy or stainless) is the primary fastener material used in aerospace, titanium is used when its advantages relative to steel are essential for a given application. The most common titanium alloy used for aerospace fasteners is TI-6Al-4V.

Metric fasteners are generally created either to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) specifications or Deutsches Institut für Normung specifications, or both (DIN/ISO specs).

Benefits of Titanium Metric Fasteners in Aerospace

Titanium exhibits higher tensile strength than other materials, even at increasing temperatures. Titanium metric fasteners are also extremely resistant to seawater and galvanic corrosion, so are found in many aeronautical and naval applications. Because they have moderate ductility and low work hardening rate, they are not ideal for every application.

Titanium Fasteners are used for…

Titanium metric fasteners are used in a limited number of applications where their high strength to weight ratio, excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, high corrosion resistance, and good fatigue strength are desired.

  • – Military and commercial maritime applications
  • – Submarine masts and exteriors
  • – Landing gear and engine components (aviation)
  • – NASA launch vehicles and spacecraft
  • – Commercial and military satellites

Here Comes the Cavalry: Meet V-280, the Black Hawk’s Likely Replacement

Don’t call it a comeback, but the V-22 Osprey of 80’s lore is making a comeback — albeit in a streamlined form. Constructed by Bell Helicopter, the V-280 Valor tiltrotor is an amazing combination between in airplane and a helicopter, and it’s currently seen as the frontrunner to replace the fabled Black Hawk helicopter.

Plus we share a few bits of company news: a recent addition to our world-class manufacturing facility in Wallington, NJ, and our most recent quality award from Phillips Screws. We hope you enjoy!

Here Comes the Cavalry: Meet the Black Hawk’s Likely Replacement

Inspired by the V-22 Osprey, but not burdened with the assembly and maintenance nightmares that came to define it, the V-280 Valor tiltrotor is something to behold — even though it is still chained to the ground.

Designed and manufactured from scratch by Bell Helicopter, the V-280 is a tiltrotor — a combination of an airplane and a helicopter. It is also the leading candidate to replace the US Army’s trusty workhorse, the Black Hawk. Why, you may ask?

Once fully operational, the V-280 Valor will provide double the speed and range of even the most advanced current helicopters. Obviously, if all goes according to plan, it will render conventional helicopters all but irrelevant. Pilots will enjoy a wrap-around view of their surroundings and will maneuver with the comfortable and intuitive flight control avionics of the Lockheed Martin’s C-130K.

Other features are a setup that swings propellers but keeps engines in place — something the V-22 lacked and limited its performance capabilities and reliability. The V-280 also includes a side-loading door, something the Army is particularly interested in. Engineering work started in 2012. Building kicked off in 2015. Tests are now underway. The V-280’s only remaining hurdle is convincing the Army to buy it over its primary competition: the SB-1 Defiant, a high speed helicopter being built jointly by Sikorsky and Boeing. Stay tuned!

Our Products Are Made with American Steel: 3 Reasons That’s Important

Everyone knows that steel is one of the strongest man-made metals on the planet. And you may also know that all steels are not equal, especially in light of the recent Kobe Steel scandal.

That’s why the Aerospace Manufacturing team wants to remind all our customers and potential new customers that our products are made from high-quality American steel. We also want to assure you that none of our products have been manufactured from steel from Kobe Steel, neither directly from that company nor through its distributors. To help you better understand why using American steel is important to us, here are three reasons we believe it’s better:

1 – American Steel Is Better Quality Steel

  • Ask any engineer or manufacturer out there that uses steel and they’ll tell you that American steel has a higher quality than most imported steel. In fact, some imported steel can have serious quality defects and even pose safety risks when used in certain applications. Some countries have even issued safety warnings about using Chinese steel. The UK in 2015, for example, warned that using steel imports from China in building structures could put lives at risk. Some imported steel is just not manufactured under the same strict standards as American steel. They may, for example, include more additives—like boron –which affect strength and durability.

2 – American Steel Is Better for the Environment

  • There’s no question about it that American steel is produced under conditions that are better for the environment. In fact, steel production in China reportedly creates five times more sulfur dioxide, 18 times more particulate matter and three times more nitrogen oxides per ton of steel than that in the United States. Additionally, the American steel industry as a whole has done a lot in recent years to proactively generate a smaller footprint. Even TreeHugger has praised the industry for its “great improvements with energy efficiency over the last decade” while improving recyclability. The group said that “steel is the most recyclable and recycled material in North America, with an overall recycling rate of 66%.”

3 – American Steel Is Better for America

  • The American steel industry directly employs about 140,000 workers, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute; however, it indirectly supports over a million more jobs in the U.S.
