What are fasteners?  

Fasteners are essential in maintaining an airworthy aircraft. It holds two or more parts together and opposing forces that might otherwise separate them. Keeping things attached and preventing them from slipping apart is the fastener’s function, also known as shear. 

A bolt that simply slides into place prevents something from moving and is most likely acting in shear. Another objective may be to hold parts together and prevent them from falling along the same axis as the screw or bolt, known as tension. 

Types of raw fastener materials

There are many different types of fasteners. But before choosing one, you need to consider factors such as the size of the product, weight, magnetic properties, stress, reusability, and expected life span. These are the different types of raw fastener materials that you can choose from: 


Steel is the most common material for fasteners. Specifications are indicated by a bolt-head marking system that suggests the fastener’s mechanical properties. Classifications may include PH13-8MO and E17-22A.   

The most common SAE grades are 2, 5, and 8. Fasteners with no critical strength requirements are typically made of SAE 1010 steel, which is applicable for machine screws, carriage bolts, and other fasteners.  

For cap screws and unique items, SAE 1018, 1020, and 1021 are used. The SAE 1038 standard provides high-strength bolts, studs, nuts, and cap screws. For special high-strength requirements, SAE 1041, 1045, 1330, and 1340 are used, and for nuts, SAE 1100 is utilized. 


Steel contains nickel, stabilizing austenite and expanding the austenite zone while compressing the ferrite region. At elevated temperatures, nickel-based alloys (A286) are more resistant to corrosion and oxidation. By refining the grain size, nickel increases toughness and strength like Waspaloy™, a nickel-based superalloy.  

Fasteners can be made from commercially pure (99.4%) metal, monel 400 and 500 series, or MP35N™ and MP159™. They are applicable where toughness, immunity to discoloration and corrosion, and strength at high temperatures are desired.

  • Easily workable: It is easier to work with than finished fasteners. It is because they have yet to undergo any processes that can make them more challenging to handle, such as plating or coating. 
  • Cost Effective: Since they do not require additional processing steps, such as plating or coating, raw fastener materials are more cost-effective than finished fasteners. 
  • Environmentally Friendly: Raw fastener materials are more environmentally friendly than finished fasteners because they do not require additional processing steps that can generate waste products, such as plating or coating. 

Application of raw fastener materials

Fasteners are widely used today due to their advantages over other joining processes and are applicable in almost all industries, but here are some things to keep in mind: 

  • A threading device is used to clean and polish the blanks. Threads are formed on a thread rolling machine by sandwiching the pieces between two flat dies, one fixed and the other reciprocating, or between 2-3 revolving cylindrical dies. 
  • The strength of the fastener is determined by its stiffness 
  • The force applied to the fastener as a result of the applied load 

 Some factors must also be considered when choosing a fastener:  

  • Easily accessible fasteners 
  • Installing the fastener is one of the essential steps in the process 
  • Fasteners may have to be exposed to several environmental conditions, including temperature, potentially corrosive elements, and water exposure, which could affect the lifespan of the fasteners
