What are fasteners?

Types of raw fastener materials
There are many different types of fasteners. But before choosing one, you need to consider factors such as the size of the product, weight, magnetic properties, stress, reusability, and expected life span. These are the different types of raw fastener materials that you can choose from:
Steel is the most common material for fasteners. Specifications are indicated by a bolt-head marking system that suggests the fastener’s mechanical properties. Classifications may include PH13-8MO and E17-22A.
The most common SAE grades are 2, 5, and 8. Fasteners with no critical strength requirements are typically made of SAE 1010 steel, which is applicable for machine screws, carriage bolts, and other fasteners.
For cap screws and unique items, SAE 1018, 1020, and 1021 are used. The SAE 1038 standard provides high-strength bolts, studs, nuts, and cap screws. For special high-strength requirements, SAE 1041, 1045, 1330, and 1340 are used, and for nuts, SAE 1100 is utilized.
Steel contains nickel, stabilizing austenite and expanding the austenite zone while compressing the ferrite region. At elevated temperatures, nickel-based alloys (A286) are more resistant to corrosion and oxidation. By refining the grain size, nickel increases toughness and strength like Waspaloy™, a nickel-based superalloy.
Fasteners can be made from commercially pure (99.4%) metal, monel 400 and 500 series, or MP35N™ and MP159™. They are applicable where toughness, immunity to discoloration and corrosion, and strength at high temperatures are desired.
