AMI Wins Contract for H3 Launch Vehicle, Japan’s Falcon 9

We are very excited to announce that Aerospace Manufacturing – AMI has won contracts to manufacture fasteners for the H3 Launch Vehicle, an expendable launch system currently in development in Japan.

Specifically, we will be creating fasteners for the LE-9, the 3 liquid rocket engines that will propel the first stage of the H3 Launch Vehicle. The H3 will be capable of delivering over 6 tons of payload to lunar transfer orbit.

History of the H3 Project

Like its predecessors the H-IIA and H-IIB (we also create bolts for the H-IIA) launch systems, the H3 is designed to launch satellites and probes for the Japanese government as well as commercial satellites for the private sector.

The development of the H3 was authorized by the Japanese government in 2013. The vehicle is being developed jointly by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

The price to launch satellites on the H3 Launch Vehicle will be on par with SpaceX’s Falcon 9, per Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Why the Airbus A321XLR Is A Game-Changer

A look at the best-selling commercial jets illustrates what airliners care about today: aircraft range and carrying capacity. These are the two variables that move the needle. Which is why the launch of the Airbus A321XLR was easily among the most important happenings at the 2019 Paris Air Show.

The Airbus A321XLR

Put simply, nothing can hold a candle to the XLR when it comes to range and seating capacity.

Airbus A321XLR range

With a range of 4,700 nautical miles, the Airbus A321XLR “Extra Long Range” is an even longer-range variant of the A321LR. It can fly from Rome to New York or Tokyo to Melbourne.

The longer range comes thanks to an enlarged fuel tank and strengthened landing gears that can handle an increased maximum takeoff weight. In terms of bells and whistles, the XLR comes with programmable LED-lighting and overhead bins that are 40% larger than previous designs.

The XLR’s 30 percent decrease in fuel burn per seat also helps airliners meet eco-friendly initiatives, albeit at the cost of slightly longer travel times. United, for example, has committed to reduce its carbon footprint by 50 percent between 2005 and 2050.

Why it’s a Game-Changer

The trend in commercial aviation is away from the traditional hub-and-spoke business model toward point-to-point, non-stop flights. The Airbus A321XLR is perfectly designed to meet this need.

Airlines utilizing the XLR along with wide-body aircraft will have the flexibility to link new cities or add additional flights on existing routes, such as using an XLR on a short connecting flight before a trans-Atlantic trip.

Boeing, needing a competitor in the long-range, narrow-body market, recently announced a joint venture with Embraer in which it paid $4.2 billion for an 80% stake of Embraer’s production of commercial jets with fewer than 150 seats.

American Airlines will replace its aging fleet of Boeing 757s with 50 XLRs. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2023 as XLRs begin rolling off the assembly line in Mobile, Alabama and Hamburg, Germany. JetBlue Airways, Iberia and Saudi Arabian Airways have also ordered the plan or converted old A321s to the new variant.

Airbus A321 Doubters

While Henry Harteveldt, founder of Atmosphere Research Group, sees “a significant number, perhaps a majority of trans-Atlantic and other long-haul routes being operated by narrow-body, long-range airplanes” like the XLR, others aren’t so sure.

The Lufthansa CEO has commented that the XLR may end up more of a “niche” aircraft, losing market share to more comfortable widebody jets, especially if commercial airliners end up prioritizing deliveries over long range.

DFARS Compliant Fasteners, Fast Lead Times

Aerospace Manufacturing – AMI follows strict internal procedures to ensure that all purchased materials conform to customers’ documented procurement requirements and meet the requirements set forth by the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) with regard to specialty metals. As a result, we have vast experience manufacturing DFARS compliant fasteners for aerospace and defense OEMs.

What are DFARS Compliant Fasteners?

The Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and the corresponding Department of Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) has a list of the requirements that companies must meet in order to do business with the U.S. government.

One requirement is that hardware, like fasteners, that is classified as being made from “specialty metal” must be made with material melted in the U.S.A.

In addition to meeting all requirements to create DFARS compliant fasteners, we are able to navigate complex fulfillment requests and testing requirements and to provide numerous value-adding services.

Airbus has a New Business Model

Maintenance, flight management and aircraft monitoring data used to be locked in separate silos that all had to be wrangled together to allow maintenance crews to diagnose and solve problems.

With Skywise, a first-of-its-kind open data platform, Airbus is not only changing how maintenance is done, it’s also changing its business model.

What is Skywise?

Skywise extracts data from all on-board systems aboard a commercial airliner, sorts and compares that data, analyzes the data to find root causes and identifies the best and least costly solutions.

Best of all? It presents all that information in a user-friendly interface that facilitates quick decision-making. The end result is safer air travel, reduced maintenance costs for airliners, and fewer delays for travelers.

It’s win-win-win situation, which explains why Skywise was on just 70 airlines in June but today can be found on more than 100 airlines and 8,500 aircraft.

The battle for new revenue streams

In the perennial battle between aerospace heavyweights Boeing and Airbus, a new front has opened. No longer are Airbus and Boeing just facing off in their core business — building and delivering aircraft on time — but in the arena of AI and big data.

In its recent earnings call, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury happily announced that Airbus’s services revenue rose to $2.8 billion over the first three quarters of the year, a 17% year-over-year increase.

Boeing, of course, blows those numbers out of the water. In the third quarter alone, Boeing reported $4.7 billion in services revenue, but a large chunk of that was from military and not commercial work.

What the Raytheon, United Technologies Merger Means for Aerospace and Defense

The Raytheon-United Technologies merger that was finalized early last month will create the largest aerospace and defense conglomerate the world has seen: Raytheon Technologies Corporation.

No fewer than four business units will come together as a part of the merger:

  • From United Technologies comes the jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney, whose sales totaled $21 billion in 2019, and Collins Aerospace, the aerospace parts maker whose sales totaled $22 billion in 2019.
  • From Raytheon comes its intelligence, space and airborne systems unit, which totaled $18 billion in sales in 2019, and its integrated defense and missile systems unit, which raked in $16 billion in 2018.

It’s not just about size

The goliath will have 60,000 employees and spend an estimated $8 billion annually on research and development alone. But what makes the merger so significant isn’t just the size of the deal.

It’s the blending of the worlds of aerospace and defense into one entity, which is unique. Propulsion systems and air traffic management systems will be made by the same company building missile systems and state-of-the-art surveillance systems.

So why merge?

According to Raytheon Technologies Corp, the merger will result in “$1 billion of gross annual cost synergies by year four” as a result of the combined entities’ complementary portfolios. Its “unsurpassed technology and expanded R&D capabilities” will “deliver innovative and cost-effective solutions aligned with customer priorities.”

It’s a vertically aligned organization — just like Aerospace Manufacturing – AMI!
