Every French word you need to know for the Paris Air Show

The Paris Air Show is a month away. If you’re attending or exhibiting, some brushing up on your français is in order. Below we’ve selected some of the most important words and phrases to commit to memory.

To grab a free notebook, pen, tote bag and microfiber glasses cleaner — or to practice your pronunciation — taxi over to Hall 6, Booth N°C73 or pick a time and day that works for you here: Répondez s’il vous plaît (RSVP)

Please

“Please” in French is “S’il vous plaît.”

Thank you

Like in any language, there are a thousand and one ways to show gratitude. If you’re a novice in French, stick to the simple and always appropriate, “Merci.”

Goodbye

Neither cold or overly formal, “Au revoir” (pronounced oh reh-vwah) is the most common way of saying goodbye in French.

Declining, politely

Almost as important as saying thank you is knowing how to politely decline. If someone offers you something or invites you somewhere, whether at the conference or on the street, you can say, “Non, merci,” which means “No, thank you.”

Where is..?

Nothing wrong with getting a bit turned around in a foreign land so long as you know how to regain your bearings. “Where is” in French is “Où est…?”

I can’t eat…

If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions, this phrase is a must: ““Je ne peux pas manger…” which means, “I don’t eat…”

  • – Nuts – les noix
  • – Peanuts – les cacahuètes
  • – Gluten – le gluten
  • – Shellfish – les fruits de mer
  • – Meat – la viande

The Critical Applications of H11 Aerospace Bolts

H series steels, which run from H1 through H19, are known for their unique toughness, abrasion resistance, and ability to resist deformation even at extreme temperatures and even under extreme stress. These characteristics make H11 aerospace bolts ideal for applications where extreme stress loads are common.

What is H11?

H11 is special alloy steel with a relatively low carbon content and chromium content between 4.75% and 5.25%. H11 is also sometimes called chromium tool steel. The most commonly used varieties are H11, H12 and H13.

H11 is easy to work with. It can be welded, machined, forged, and cold worked with conventional methods. Its machinability rate is roughly 75% that of W group steels.

Benefits of H11 Aerospace Bolts

  • – Extreme resistance to stress and impact
  • – Good resistance to thermal fatigue cracking

Dassault and Airbus to Collaborate on Next-Generation Combat Jet

Dassault Aviation and Airbus have been awarded the first-ever Joint Concept Study (JCS) contract for the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program by France and Germany. The two-year study kicked off February 20, just in time to have demonstrator programs ready for presentation at the Paris Air Show in June 2019.

The goal of the joint study is to come up with different FCAS capabilities and pave the way for the design, industrialization and full operational capability of a next-generation manned fighter, new weapons systems, and unmanned drones that would be linked together by the cloud.

FCAS is more than just a combat aircraft. It is a system of systems including a large array of interconnected and interoperable elements, from medium-altitude, long endurance drones to cruise missiles and drone swarms.

According to Dirk Hoke, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space, “FCAS is one of the most ambitious European defense programs of the century.”

Project completion is slated for 2040.

Dassault Aviation, the architect and integrator of the combat system, is based in Paris and has its North American HQ just down the road from us in Teteboro. Airbus, based in Toulouse, has its North American HQ in Herndon, VA.

Though currently only France and Germany have signed onto the project, Hoke thinks more European involvement will be necessary. “FCAS should be and is a European project that transcends national borders, bringing in involvement from countries such as Spain, Italy, Sweden, Belgium and more,” he said.

According to Boeing, the 737 Dreamliner is made of 15 percent titanium. Much of that is in the form of titanium aerospace fasteners. So what makes titanium right for the job?

Titanium has the highest strength-to-density ratio of any metallic element. Grade 5 titanium is four times stronger than steel and almost 50 percent lighter. Titanium is 200 percent stronger than aluminum but only 60 percent heavier.

Add to its strength-to-weight ratio its unique corrosion resistance, and it’s no wonder that titanium is commonly used for numerous demanding aerospace applications.

Characteristics of Titanium Aerospace Bolts

  • – Not a good conductor of electricity or heat
  • – High temperature performance
  • – High strength-to-density ratio
  • – Non-magnetic
  • – Corrosion resistance

Expect Electric Aircraft at Major Airports by 2030

Designed by Austrians Fred Militky and Heino Brditschka and first taking flight in 1973, the Militky MB-E1 is considered the world’s first electric aircraft. It was powered by a Bosch DC motor that had been taken from a forklift and flew for 14 minutes on a Nickel-cadmium (NiCad) battery, then a new invention.

All these years later, battery power remains the limiting factor for electric aircraft. The more powerful the battery, the heavier it is, and at the moment no battery is powerful enough to carry more than a few passengers for any significant distance.

Recent Progress in Electric Aircraft

But progress is being made.

Just as great strides have been taken in electric car technology by companies like Tesla, similar strides have been made in the air by companies like Airbus and Siemens.

The Airbus E-Fan, which was introduced at Farnborough Air Show in 2014, was a prototype two-seater electric aircraft that was originally slated to enter production for pilot training, but it was scrapped in 2017 as the company preferred to focus on the development of a hybrid-electric, regional jet-sized aircraft.

In terms of power-to-weight ratio and speed, no electric aircraft has outdone the Siemens Extra 330LE, which set a speed record for electric aircraft in 2017 after clocking in at 209.7 mph. Its 110 lb motor boasts a constant output of 260 kilowatts.

Rolls-Royce is aiming to beat out Siemens with its newly designed electric aircraft, which it says will reach speeds of 300 mph and travel 300 miles on a single charge. The company says it’s scheduled to debut in 2020.

These small all-electric aircraft are laying the groundwork for the technology. As happened in the automotive industry, we’re likely to see widespread use of hybrid-electric technology in aerospace before we see all-electric.

Hybrid Electric Airplanes

Boeing is aiming to build a 12-seat hybrid plane with a 700-mile range by 2022.

One of the most important projects in the the partnership between Rolls-Royce, Siemens and Airbus to build a hybrid-electric demonstrator for the British Aerospace 146, a short-haul and regional airliner.

One of its four Lycoming ALF502 turbofan engines will be replaced by a two megawatt Siemens electric motor adapted by Rolls-Royce to integrate with its AE2100 turboshaft engine, powered by an Airbus-designed 2-ton battery.

Across the globe there are over 100 electric aircraft projects underway. London’s Heathrow has said it expects to see electric jetliners at major airports by 2030.
